A new study shows that over-the-counter (OTC) pain relief medications can provide long-term relief from chronic pain. The study authors in the new study say their results could help people suffering from arthritis, also known as arthritis of the hand or wrist, and also help them develop new coping mechanisms for their pain.
The study was published Monday inThe Lancet. A recent study published in the journalUrologyfound that over-the-counter OTC pain relief medications like Voltaren, Arthritis Max, and other non-opioid pain medications were associated with an increased risk of developing a condition known as osteoarthritis of the hip, the authors of the study said.
“The evidence is compelling that this is a complex issue that requires a multidisciplinary approach,” Dr. Emily Johnson, a urologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said in a statement. “OTC pain medications are a valuable tool in the management of pain in the elderly population and are not without their potential side effects.”
Voltaren was approved in 2013 and is used to treat osteoarthritis of the hand and wrist pain. Arthritis Max is available for a prescription.

In the study, they found that OTC OTC pain relief medications did not appear to increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis of the hand or wrist. Johnson said she hopes the study will be the first to offer patients with osteoarthritis pain relief medications the opportunity to get more information about their options.
“I know people who have been suffering with arthritis for a long time, and they would have options that are not covered by insurance,” she said. “But I also know that OTC pain relief medications can help people who have had arthritis or have other conditions that might cause it.”
John Smith, an OB-GYN at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said that most people who use OTC pain relief medication for long periods of time would not be able to access their treatment because of the potential risks. “It’s just a matter of the patient’s desire to be able to get the medication,” Smith said.
